Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, claiming the vital shipping route is now "under US control". The US President made the extraordinary suggestion in a post on Truth Social, asking his 13million followers whether the crucial waterway should become the "TRUMP STRAIT".
He wrote: "Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? "Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP." Trump's suggestion comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz. American forces launched fresh strikes on Iranian targets near the crucial shipping route on Tuesday, with Trump describing the attacks as "large and powerful". The US President said the strikes were in retaliation for what he described as Iran's failed attempt to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as eight missiles allegedly fired at a US military base in Jordan.
