The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating a migrant smuggler with ties to the Islamic State (ISIS) who helped more than a dozen migrants enter the United States illegally through the southern border with Mexico.

The investigation started when U.S. intelligence officials discovered a smuggling network based in Turkey that brought people mainly from Uzbekistan into the U.S., with one of the smugglers used by this network having ties to ISIS.

The FBI noted that it has not uncovered any evidence of a specific ISIS plot, and National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson added that authorities have not uncovered any evidence that the illegals smuggled into the country by the network have any ties to ISIS or any other extremist organizations.

Watson further noted that the White House is closely scrutinizing several of the illegals that were smuggled in by the ISIS-linked individual as possible criminal threats. These individuals who "fit the profile" of those assisted by the smuggling network are already being placed in rapid deportation proceedings and "thoroughly vetted."

About 15 of the roughly 120 migrants from Uzbekistan smuggled into the U.S. by the ISIS-linked individual fit this profile, and the FBI is reportedly trying to locate all of them.
