A powerful magnitude 5 earthquake rattled San Francisco this morning, shaking residents awake.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake was at a depth of 5.59 miles, and was centred near Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz mountains.
The strong tremor was felt across the Bay Area at around 1.45am, with people receiving alerts on their phones.
There were no immediate reports of damage, although violent shaking was felt across the region, including in San Francisco, Oakland and Petaluma.
The earthquake was originally reported as a 5.1 magnitude but was then revised to 4.9.
