President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night in Lubbock, Texas, that his administration is rolling back Biden-era emissions regulations on oil and gas producers, saying the changes will reduce costs and increase energy production.
“Tonight, I'm officially terminating Biden's expensive and unnecessary methane regulations,” Trump said of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) third-party monitoring program for “super emitter” leak events, noting other requirements under the Clear Air Act that also address this risk.
More broadly, the proposals review the “overall approach to regulating associated gas from oil wells,” the EPA said, in favor of reducing regulatory burden regarding well emissions, and outlining clearer categories and standards while still meeting Clean Air Act requirements.
This includes creating separate standards for marginal (low-producing) and non-marginal well sites to ensure that regulations are workable for all well types, including “families who have marginal wells and use the oil and gas they produce to power their homes or run farm equipment.”
