(The Hill) A majority of Americans say presidents should be subject to being charged with a crime while theyre still in office according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. Seventy-one percent of respondents including 49 percent of Republicans said sitting presidents should be subject to indictment while 21 percent said they shouldnt. Thirty-eight percent of GOP respondents opposed allowing criminal charges to be brought against a president whos in office. Sixty percent of Americans said they dont think Congress should begin impeachment proceedings for President Trump while 56 percent said he does not respect the rule of law. The debate over the legality of trying a sitting president has intensified after federal prosecutors in New York this month said in a legal filing that Trumps former attorney Michael Cohen violated campaign finance law
