(The Hill) Michael Burke 01/27/19 11:33 AM House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) said Sunday that it is certainly not appropriate right now to bring articles of impeachment against President Trump. Jeffries added during an interview on NBCs Meet the Press that House Democrats are not going to overreach in regard to their constitutional responsibility to serve as a check on Trump. We do have a constitutional responsibility pursuant to Article One to serve as a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch he said. We take that responsibility seriously. However were not going to over-investigate. Were not going to over-politicize. Were not going to overreach as it relates to that solemn constitutional responsibility. Jeffriess comments follow Fridays indictment against longtime informal Trump adviser Roger Stone. Stone was indicted by special counsel Robert Muellers team on one count of obstruction of an official proceeding five counts of false statements and one count of witness tampering. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and alleged possible collusion between Moscow and Trumps campaign. The indictment also alleges that a top Trump campaign official was instructed to contact Stone to get information about the WikiLeaks hacks of Democratic emails ahead of the 2016 election.
